Room 7's Guide to Being Awesome
In Room 7 we pride ourselves on being the BEST! However, we are not just trying to be the best 'academic' students we can be. We are also trying to be the best human beings we can be; and not just at school! These 22 Guidelines to Success help us to know how to work, how to act and how to treat people at school, home, at sport and play, when we are shopping at the mall... in fact EVERYWHERE!!! These guidelines are not something new. Many of these we already use at home, on the sports field, when out with friends etc.
If we learn, remember and follow these guidelines we will quickly find that these will make us stand out from the crowd. We will be noticed by others as someone they will want to be around, who they can trust and work with, because we will have the makings of becoming a great person! Let’s start using these today!
Guideline 1
- We will always take great pride in our work.
- We will write in black pen and mark in red.
- If we make a mistake in our book we will neatly rule a line through the word using a ruler.
- We will always miss lines between answers
Guideline 2
When we are in transition from one subject to the next, the change will be swift, quiet and orderly. We should be able to go from one subject to another, complete with all books and pens as quickly and as quietly as possible.
Guideline 3
In class we will never call out. If we have a question during a lesson we are to raise our hand and wait patiently.
Guideline 4
We will not save seats on the mat or anywhere else around us. If someone wants to sit down, we will let them. Room 7 is like a family and we must treat one another with respect and kindness.
Guideline 5
If someone in the class wins a game or does something well, we will congratulate that person by clapping. Everyone will clap. This is not optional. We never try to be the last person to clap when everyone else has finished. This shows a lack of self-control.
Guideline 6
At times throughout the year, you may be given rewards for good behaviour, academic performances or other acts worthy of praise. However, if you ever ask for a reward it will not be given (even if you were about to get one).
Guideline 7
No matter what the circumstances, always be honest. Even if you have done something really, really bad, it is best to admit it straight away, because this is the right thing to do and you will be respected for that
Guideline 8
Never swear or use bad language. All it shows is that you are trying to show off. Anyone can swear but It takes someone who can control themselves, not to.
Guideline 9
Always speak nicely to others. We will never say bad or nasty things about others to their face or behind their back. We will never gossip about others. If we cannot say something nice about someone then we will not say it at all.
Guideline 10
Always make eye contact when someone is speaking to you. Keep your eyes on him or her at all times. If someone makes a comment, turn and face that person.
Guideline 11
If you are asked a question in conversation, you must always ask a question in return:
Me: “Did you have a nice weekend?”
You: “Yes, I had a great time. My family and I went shopping. What about you? Did you have a nice weekend?”
Guideline 12
If we win or do well at something, we will not brag. If we lose, we will not show anger. Instead, we will say something like, “Thanks for the game, I really enjoyed playing,” or, “well done.” To show anger or to use sarcasm, such as, “I wasn’t playing hard anyway” or, “You really aren’t that good,” shows weakness.
Guideline 13
If someone drops something in front of you, pick it up and hand it back to them. Even if they are closer to the object than you, it is only polite to make the gesture of bending down to retrieve it.
Guideline 14 When you walk into class in the morning, the first thing you should do is greet any adults in the room. When walking around the school, at morning tea or lunch you should also always greet any teacher or adult you pass. Teachers are always so impressed with children who do this and it is the right and polite thing to do.
Guideline 15
At the end of the day you should always thank me or anyone else who has helped you in the day. This also includes swimming instructors, sports coaches, parent helpers, other teachers etc. I am personally not worried about being thanked myself. However, I am concerned with teaching you that you should always show appreciation when someone has helped you in any way.
Guideline 16
If you approach a door and someone is following you, hold it open for them. If the door opens by pulling, pull it open, stand to the side, and allow the other person to pass through it first. If the door opens by pushing, walk through then hold the door open behind you to allow them to come through.
Guideline 17
When you cough, sneeze or burp, it is only polite to turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with your hand. Afterward, you should always say, “Excuse me.” If someone sneezes it is polite to say “bless you.”
Guideline 18
Always say thank you when you are given something. If you do not say thank you within 2 seconds of receiving an item, it will be taken back off you and you may miss out. There is no excuse for not showing appreciation. This is very important!
Guideline 19
When walking around the school as a class, we will walk in two straight lines; directly behind the person in front of us (unless of course we are the line leader). We will face forward at all times. There will be absolutely no talking from the moment we stand in line. Nobody should hear us coming. This will ensure we do not disrupt any other classes who may be working. This is called Stealth Mode.
Guideline 20
During assembly we will not speak or look around and try to get the attention of others. We will sit quietly facing forward. Even if other classes are talking and being silly, we will not. This shows that we can control ourselves.
Guideline 21
Be the best person you can be.” Put yourself second to others. Be humble.
Guideline 22
Have fun and be awesome!
