Room 7 is beginning a secret art project for the upcoming Russley Art Evening next Thursday. Part of our inspiration for this project is Jackson Pollock, an American painter who was a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He is well known for his unique style of 'drip painting'. Below is a video we watched in class today, partly from a film called Pollock, showing elements of his work and particularly how he first came to begin to paint in the way he became famous for. Today Russley School was treated to an amazing performance by T.Y.P - The Young Project. They entered X-Factor New Zealand as individuals but at Boot camp were put together as a group. They then went through to the Judge's Retreat Round, with Melanie Blatt as their mentor, but were unlucky enough to just miss out on going through to the live shows.
Today they performed 5 amazing songs (in amongst the ear splitting screams of the Russley girls every time they sang, stopped singing, smiled, moved etc) and then were very generous in spending over an hour signing autographs and posing for photos! Thank you T.Y.P you guys are amazing!!! Room 7 have just begun reading an amazing book called Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The story is about a boy called August (Auggie) Pullman. He was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school—until now. He's about to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, despite appearances? This is an incredible book that really strikes at the heart of what it is to be human. If you have not read it yet, read it! If you have read it then tell us what you thought about it in the comments section. Below is the 'Book Trailer' of Wonder. Check it out people! On Wednesday night, the Russley Choir performed at the North West Music Festival. In front of over 800 people, they sang six songs with the massed choir and then two songs by themselves. They were fantastic! Here are some pics of the amazing choir in action!
Have you entered Team 3's 100 Word Challenge yet? It would be great to see lots of Room 7 kids in-to-win this week!
Remember this week's task is to write an 'explanation' about how the machine in the picture below might work. Click on the pic to be taken straight to the Team 3 blog. Go for it writers! Room 7 have started an amazing online reading program called readtheory.org
This is going to be used to supplement work inside of the class and the children can also access it for homework or just for fun! With achievement badges and points up for grabs it is a great motivation for them all to improve their reading comprehension, inferencing and knowledge. It was so much fun that nearly all of the class spent part of their lunch reading extra stories, trying to gain points and badges! Click on the banner above to login. Today, while the Kapa haka children were out, the remainder of Room 7 spent a very merry 40 minutes on Story Place.
This is a site with a range of (very funny) stories which you can choose to read. Each has a lot of music, sound and animations to go with each one. What we loved was you could choose both the characters and their names. Check it out by clicking on the picture above. |
